For decades, sharks in the Mexican Caribbean faced intense fishing pressure that drastically reduced their populations. However, today the news is encouraging: marine life is returning, and sharks—guardians of the ocean—are once again swimming in our waters.
The presence of sharks is one of the clearest indicators of a healthy ecosystem. These apex predators regulate the populations of other species and maintain the balance in the marine food chain. Their return to the Mexican Caribbean symbolizes that conservation works, and that communities can thrive without sacrificing wildlife.
The coordinated efforts are yielding measurable results: Biodiversity is increasing, reefs are showing signs of recovery, and sustainable tourism is consolidating itself as a local economic engine..
Recent reports from some media outlets such as Lights of the Century and the Report on sightings of sharks, rays and marine megafauna from the National Commission of Protected Natural Areas (CONANP) , Studies confirm that shark populations in the Mexican Caribbean are showing signs of recovery. Sightings are increasingly being reported in coastal and diving areas, a clear indicator that marine ecosystems are beginning to restore their natural balance.
This recovery is no coincidence. It is the result of years of work by the Saving Our Sharks Foundation and his Isla Mujeres Shark Initiative, a project that has transformed both marine conservation and the lives of coastal communities.
From fishermen to protectors: the “Masters of the Sea”
Until a few years ago, around 70% of the Mexican Caribbean shark fishery It came from cooperatives in Isla Mujeres. But thanks to the alliance of fishing cooperatives in Isla Mujeres such as Patria y Progreso and Kab Xok Cooperative, With the Saving Our Sharks Foundation, that outlook changed radically.
Through the Isla Mujeres Shark Initiative, The fishermen have voluntarily given up their main source of income—shark fishing—to become “Masters of the Sea”, guardians and protectors of the species they once captured.
The Foundation has supported this transition with training, equipment and new economic opportunities:
- Training in shark monitoring and citizen science,
- Training in ecotourism and sustainable diving,
- Participation in projects of environmental research and education,
- And the creation of initiatives such as Shark Safari, a pioneering eco-expedition in Mexico that transforms shark watching into an educational and responsible experience. Each Shark Safari expedition generates income that strengthens local cooperatives, promotes marine conservation, and fosters responsible tourism.
Tangible results for the ocean and communities
Since the start of its operations, Saving Our Sharks has saved more than 20,000 sharks and has directly benefited more than 32 fishing families, in addition to establishing more than 106 cross-sector alliances between governments, universities, and businesses.
Thanks to these actions, the Kab Xok Cooperative of Isla Mujeres has become a model of the transition from fishing to conservation. What was once a high-catch area is now a hotbed of science, responsible tourism, and hope for the marine future of the Caribbean.
The project also seeks to lay the foundations for the First Shark and Ray Sanctuary in the Mexican Caribbean, a marine refuge that will encompass more than 500 hectares of mangroves and coastal lagoons, protecting key breeding and reproduction areas.
Gratitude to those who make this change possible
None of this would be possible without the commitment of the former shark fishermen of the Kab Xok Cooperative, and the generosity of our donors, strategic partners and affiliated companies, who have become true Shark Heroes. Thanks to your continued support, the Saving Our Sharks Foundation has been able to fund research projects, strengthen fishing cooperatives, acquire specialized equipment, and expand environmental education and ecotourism initiatives. Every contribution—large or small—translates into direct protection for the sharks of the Mexican Caribbean and real opportunities for local communities. To all who believe in this mission and walk with us in defending the ocean: Thank you for being the driving force behind conservation and for helping us transform lives while saving sharks.
